Computer Virus Hits Office Printers Now

Hello friends,

Thousands of office printers around the world have been spewing out page after page of gibberish after being hit with a computer virus.

As several companies complained that thousands of pages of paper were wasted when the Windows virus hit their computers, security firms said the worst hit were large businesses in the US, India, Europe, and South America.
According to the BBC, the virus is learn to be a malicious program called Milicenso, which has been re-used many times by hi-tech crime groups.

Security firm Symantec, in a blog post analysis the virus, claimed that Milicenso was first seen in 2010 and because it was a "malware delivery vehicle for hire" had turned up regularly ever since, while its most recent incarnation was as a tool for distributing French language adware.

Symantec said one side effect of infection was to generate a file in a PC's printer queue, which turns the contents of the files in the virus's main directory into print jobs.

"The garbled printouts appear to be a side effect of the infection vector rather an intentional goal of the author," said Symantec.

Security firms have now issued updates that should spot Milicenso and clean up any infection

Top malwares threatening Android smartphones

Hello friends,

Are you a android  smartphone users?
Then here is a bad news for you all, Sophos Labs, a mobile security company based in United States, has released a list of top five malware threats against Android based mobile devices.
The top five malware threats are as follows:

Andr/PJApps-C

Contrary to the popular belief, hackers are even luring users into their trap through paid applications

This has been said by by Sophos Mobile Security app for Android. It has detected an app as Andr/PJApps-C which means that the app has been identified that has been cracked using a publicly available tool.
Most commonly these are paid for apps that have been hacked. They are not necessarily always malicious, but are very likely to be illegal.

Andr/BBridge-A

Also known as BaseBridge, this malware uses a privilege escalation exploit to elevate its privileges and install additional malicious apps onto your Android device. It uses HTTP to communicate with a central server and leaks potentially identifiable information.

These malicious apps can send and read SMS messages, potentially costing you money.

In fact, it can even scan your incoming SMS messages and automatically remove warnings that you are being charged for using premium rate services, for which it has signed you up for.

Andr/BatteryD-A

This "Battery Doctor" app falsely claims to save battery life on your Android device. But it actually sends potentially identifiable information to a server using HTTP, and aggressively displays adverts.

Andr/Generic-S

Sophos Mobile Security generically detects a variety of families of malicious apps as Andr/Generic-S. These ranges from privilege escalation exploits to aggressive adware such as variants of the Android Plankton malware.

Andr/DrSheep-A

Remember Firesheep? The desktop tool can allow malicious hackers to hijack Twitter, Facebook and Linkedin sessions in a wireless network environment. Andr/DrSheep-A is the Android equivalent of that tool.

Some of the other most commonly-seen Android malware according to Sophos labs areAndr/DroidRt-A which is a set of privilege escalation exploits that can allow someone to obtain root access to an Android device. Also, there is one Andr/Opfake-C which is a fake Opera app which may install other malicious Android packages and send SMS messages to a premium line number, depending on country.

Similar in terms of functionality to Andr/Opfake-C, Andr/Boxer-A malware poses as a fake installer for an Opera browser update, Skype, anti-virus software, Instagram and many other popular apps.

The malware may install other malicious Android packages and - predictably - send SMS messages to premium rate services numbers. It attempts to evade detection by adding a random number of images of "witness from Fryazino" therefore making the APK file binary different every few downloads."

Microsoft has unveiled Surface tablet

Hello friends,

Microsoft has unveiled Surface, a tablet computer to compete with Apple’s iPad.

CEO Steve Ballmer was on hand to announce the new tablet, calling it part of a “whole new family of devices” the company is developing.

One version of the device, which won’t go on sale until sometime in the fall, is about 9.3 millimetres thick and works on the Windows RT operating system. It comes with a kickstand to hold it upright and a touch keyboard cover that snaps on using magnets. The device weighs under 680 grams and will cost about as much as other tablet computers. Its debut is set to coincide with the upcoming fall release of Microsoft’s much-anticipated Windows 8 operating system.

Steven Sinofsky, president of Microsoft’s Windows division, called the device a “tablet that’s a great PC PC that’s a great tablet.”

Features:

A slightly thicker version, less than 14 millimetres thick and under 910 grams, will work on Microsoft’s upcoming Windows 8 Pro operating system and cost as much as an Ultrabook, the company said. The pro version comes with a stylus that allows users to make handwritten notes on documents such as PDF files.

Each tablet comes with a keyboard cover that is just 3 millimetres thick. The kickstand for both tablets was just 0.7 millimetres thick, slimmer than a credit card.

Microsoft has been making software for tablets since 2002, when it shipped the Windows XP Tablet PC Edition. Many big PC makers produced tablets that ran the software, but they were never big sellers. The tablets were based on PC technology, and were heavy, with short battery lives.

Microsoft didn’t say how long the Surface would last on battery power.

Open Garden/New app for smartphone to share internet or Wi-Fi

 Hello friends,
A new smartphone app allows you to share mobile Web access for free with other people nearby who have the same app,Called Open Garden, the app forms a mesh network that enables each person connected to it to relay it to other users.

If you are a smartphone user with Open Garden app in cafe or hotel and does not have access to Wi-Fi, but someone else does, the you can piggyback on the other person’s connection.

Micha Benoliel, co-founder and CEO of the San Francisco-based company Open Garden said that
“Every smartphone is a computer and a router, so we thought it was the right time to  interconnect all of these devices together to make general access more ubiquitous.”

The company is working on features to help users limit who shares their Internet and data connections and how much data they want to allocate to the app.

In future versions, the company said users will be able to connect to social networks to specify desired network sharers.

Example:- You can be traveling and arrive at an airport and instead of paying expensive roaming charges, you can just connect to someone in the airport who has Open Garden,”

When there is no direct Internet connection in the network, the app accesses the Web through links to other devices such as laptops or mobile phones. If the person whose connection is being shared leaves the network, the app automatically connects to the next best connection.

Features:

The app is available for Android devices, Windows and Mac. It works as a mesh network only if it has been installed by other people nearby to form the peer-to-peer connections.

The app can also be used to interconnect different devices, such as an iPhone and tablets, for free using the plan.

So now enjoy with the internet where ever you go....

LinkedIn Alerts users to change Password/ LinkedIn hack

Hello  friends,

If you are a LinkedIn users,Here is a  bad news for you all as yesterday their was a  massive password leak at LinkedIn, believed to have affected over 6 million users, security experts have recommended that LinkedIn users change their passwords immediately.

If you think that by simply changing your LinkedIn password you are safe? Think again. You may need to change many of your online passwords.

The reason is that many users tend to use the same passwords across multiple Web services - such as Google, Facebook, Twitter and other accounts. So whoever stole the LinkedIn data can use the information to access your other online accounts. Therefore it is advisable to update all your passwords which are the same as your LinkedIn password.

You should also consider making your passwords stronger and avoid those that match words in a dictionary. One way is to think of a meaningful phrase or song and create a password using the first letter of each word.

Note:- Its best to keep  different passwords to different web sites and make sure that  it is not a common name or a place.  use a unique name or word  combine it with some special characters and numbers.

Microsoft alerts about Flame virus .

 Hello friends,
I'm sharing this news  regarding the new virus called Flame which is been recognized by the Microsoft ..

Software used in the  Businesses should install a Microsoft security update to avoid being duped by exploited certificates that were used as part of the Flame malware attack against targeted Iranian computer networks.

The update fixes a vulnerability in Microsoft's Terminal Server Licensing Service that allowed signing of software with certificates as if it were code originating from Microsoft, the company said in a blog post.

The post, written by Mike Reavey, the senior director of Microsoft Trustworthy Computing, says an older cryptography algorithm proved exploitable and could be used to sign malicious code to certify that it came from Microsoft.

Terminal Services Licensing Service provided certificates that were permitted to sign code as if it came from Microsoft, the blog says. The certificates were intended to authorize Remote Desktop services securely.

The company issued a security advisory about how to correct the problem, and recommends that customers apply the update using update management software or Microsoft Update service
.

"The update revokes the trust of the following intermediate [certificate authority] certificates: Microsoft Enforced Licensing Intermediate PCA (2 certificates), Microsoft Enforced Licensing Registration Authority CA (SHA1)," the advisory says.

An intermediate CA is a certificate authority that doesn't have the trust of the device it is connecting to, but it does have the trust of a root CA that the device does trust. Chains of intermediate CAs can lead back to a trusted root CA, and devices attempt to follow those chains to establish authenticity of certificates.
Weaknesses in this chain-of-trust system have were exploited repeatedly last year against SSL certificates used by browsers to authenticate websites. This led to repeated calls for a new authentication system

The announcement is part of Microsoft's effort to turn the Xbox video game console into the entertainment hub of the home. It also likely signals the death of its Zune Music service, with the company all but completely abandoning the music player.

The service is also expected to work with phones as well. Microsoft is following the path of Sony, which has also brought music to many devices, including the PlayStation and multiple mobile device.
